One Puff can Kill you!

Hey everyone,

I am interested in touching on this topic which is called "dangers of smoking" as smoking is very common in today’s society. Mostly everywhere you go, we are normally surrounded with smokers. Sometimes the people around us who smoke could be our parents, friends, relatives, and also strangers as well. I guess some of us may find it hard to be around with smokers but as to some they might have gotten used to it. Well it may seem alright for them now but we don’t know what they are in for especially if we are unaware of the dangers of smoking. Although we may not be interested in smoking but if were are surrounded with smokers, this can lead to health problems.

Secondhand smoking is more dangerous than smoking by ourselves. Many people who have realized about this issue are trying raise awareness of public smoking. Public smoking relates to second hand smoking as for example, even an individual is smoking around or nearby to where you are, although they are allowed to smoke in that area, we are still breathing their smoke and this could effect our health if we do not take any action. The only way for people to avoid breathing smoke is to walk away from that person who smokes or you could politely tell that person not to smoke in your direction. As for those who smoke, they should already be aware of the consequences that they will have to face in the future.

Many people especially youngsters feels that smoking is ‘cool’ or it reduce stress but not knowing that it could damage your whole body system at the end of the day. Therefore the government is also trying to help the youths to overcome this problem by providing the right anti smoking education for them. Moreover, many women are addicted to this habit and they have find it hard to quit.As for women to smoke is very dangerous as it could effect the body system for instance affect pregnancy, age faster, and also suffer from cancer.

Once somebody is addicted to something it is quite unlikely for that person to give up. One cigarette that you take could affect your life. Many health organizations are trying their level best to do as much as they can to help those who find it difficult to quit smoking. For instance promoting warning signs on cigarettes boxes, campaignes, posters of smoking, herbal remedies and many more. Perhaps we are unsure whether the solutions above are able to change people’s habits of smoking as some may still find it hard to give up.There have been many law issues that were raised in order for the government to stop selling cigarettes but it somehow failed as many could have been unhappy about this situation. Overall I believe this depends on the individual itself whether he or she is willing to discipline themselves in order for them to cut this addiction out of their life.

Hi Delicia
When I saw your blog, I was shock by the background color- BLACK! And then I just realized black match your topic- smoking issue. I think that is a good choice.

Yesterday I watched the news about smoking in Auckland. Few years ago, the Auckland council has legislated the laws which strongly forbid people smoke in the restaurants. What I heard from news was that there is one more place where do not allow people smoke- Parks. I think this is really a good idea. We all know who are normally in the park- children of course. As your article mentions that the secondhand smoking is more harmful for children. So this is what I am happy to see in the future.

hey emily yes i agree with u.I think like in public places such as parks, there are many children who are always there but still many parents take the advatage of smoking in these kind of areas because it is a public place.I think its good if the government could create this rule of not smoking in certain areas especially where kids are involved..i think parents should beaware of this too and not to smoke infront of young children.

Hi deli. Awesome topic! Good stuff. I think the issue of smoking is a huge problem in today's society. Those that choose to smoke choose to bring harm not only to themselves but also to their loved ones which I think is very sad. I'm actually currently trying to help my husband to quit smoking.,he's taking pills to help him quit and we've seen a huge change in the amount of cigarettes he smokes per day, he's gone from a pack a day to just a few day now. One thing I can tell you for sure though is its a massive struggle! I'm hoping this will be the last attempt at quiting! Wish me luck! And thanks for the great info you've included in your blog. I had a good read.

Hi Delicia, Good choice! My window at work has a beautiful view. But that area attracts lots of smokers too. By the way, it is on the ground floor. The disgusting smell makes me so angry!

Smoking, drinking problem and violence have become common social problems in NZ.

Why youngsters feel smoking is cool? Why people want to have a try? I believe education (schooling, family education), role models from the society, medias can change it for good.

What do you think?

Hi aw.thanks for your comment.yeah i hate people who smoke and i myself cant stand the smell. As you mentioned about the media and education..i have to agree with u on that..the media has to play a role in this area.I think more advertising will be good especially on Tv,newspaper, magazines, posters and so on.I think even using celebrities in advertising will be good as many people look up to them.So it may be good chance to help them stop smoking. As for education i think in primary schools teachers should aware young children about the dangers of smoking. In this way they are expose about these stuff at a young age.I also believe parents should also set a good example for their kids and to let them know that smoking is a bad habit.hopefully by doing this it could help people to be more aware of smoking espcially younsgters.

Hi, all
I was attracted by the title "One Puff can kill you!" totally!

It's really a good topic which related to every one!

Same as you, I hate the smell from smoking! It makes me dizzy and vomit. It's really needs to be prohibitted! We people who have to endure the awful smoke and smell from the smokers are totally innocent!

However, I fell New Zealand government is doing very well in regulating smoking in public areas. It's hardly to find smokers inside the buildings and on the public transports. It's really a good protection for people who suffer from second-hand smoking.

Smoking sux. NZ has done a pretty good job letting everyone know that it WILL kill you. So those kids that you wrote about who were smoking without knowing the effects should now have a very clear idea. I wonder why people still chose to do it then? I like how you wrote about what it does to woman, do female smokers use moisturizer? It would seem pretty hypocritical to me to do so as they show by their smoking the decision they've already made. That being "I choose to look like a shriveled old hag" :)
